No matter why you have a tank in your house or what size it is, you will need to have it cleaned out regularly. Have you ever tried to clean the gravel in the bottom of the tank by scooping it out, washing it in the sink and putting it back in the tank? It didn’t really work out that well, did it? You still missed some stones on the bottom of the tank and the ones that you did get out dripped water all over the floor and counter top. Then when they were rinsed they left dirt and “fish gunk” in the bottom of your sink. Now there is a second mess to clean up.
One way to eliminate the extra mess is to invest in a gravel cleaner. The gravel cleaner operates on the same principles of how a swimming pool vacuum does. There is a pump or device where the suction begins. There is a tube that goes in to the water, with the suction working through it, that goes over all of the gravel pieces and sucks up all of the dirt and debris left behind by the fish.
There are lots of options when it comes to the size and strength of your gravel cleaner. The tube within the cleaner can be large or small in diameter. Smaller tubes work better for a few reasons. A smaller tank will need a smaller tube so as to not knock over the rocks or other decorations within the tank. A smaller tube will be easier to manage by not sucking up the fish in the tank too.
The tube length will also be a variable. A small tank will only need a long enough tube to reach down in to the waste bucket that is attached with the system. A very large tank will need a longer tube so that it offers more flexibility to the person cleaning. They can walk along the length of the tank and keep going and taking the tubes with them, so they don’t stop and have to move the waste bucket with them. A longer hose makes the job easier to do because it can all be done in one motion. When a job is easier to do, then it is done more often and the fish tank is kept with gravel cleaner.
